The Mechanism of Anabolic Steroids in Muscle Development
Compounds called steroids have similar chemical structures. One of the many different types of steroids that affect how our body works and performs is anabolic steroids. Anabolic steroids are broken down by the body into molecules that are then transported into the cells when you take them. Here, androgen receptors—structures whose primary function is to interact with the testosterone that the body normally produces—are chemically bound by steroid molecules.
So in essence, synthetic steroids deceive your body into believing they are testosterone. The androgen receptors are activated after the steroid molecules are in situ. The two basic ways that steroids affect the body's regular metabolism result in increased muscle growth. Anabolism is the term for the stage of the metabolic cycle when energy is saved and simple molecules are converted into more complex ones. The process of anabolism is also when your body builds muscles, which is why these steroids are referred to as "anabolic steroids."
